PRESS RELEASE

Holger Banik, Managing Director of Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co KG, Olaf Lies, Niedersachsens Minister for Economic Affairs, Transport, Building and Digitalisation, and Dieter Janecek, Federal Government Coordinator for the Maritime Economy and Tourism, awarded the concessions for the operating companies of the new terminals in Cuxhaven at a press conference held directly on the Elbe river in Cuxhaven today.

With completion planned for 2028, Blue Water BREB GmbH and Rhenus Cuxport GmbH will each operate half of the new sites.

In Cuxhaven, new berths are being built over a length of 1,250 metres, including the associated terminal areas of more than 30 hectares.

‘With the expansion of the harbour, Cuxhaven is living up to its role as a market leader and is consistently expanding its unique position as an industrial and logistics hotspot for wind energy on the North Sea coast,’ says Arne Ehlers, Managing Director of Blue Water BREB in Cuxhaven, welcoming this important milestone and continues: ’The German-Danish Blue Water BREB has played a significant role in this local development and will continue on this course. The so-called gap closure of berths 5 - 7 as well as the development area F90 of the city of Cuxhaven are urgently needed to meet the needs of our customers.’

Blue Water BREB receives the concession for the terminal area with berths 6.2 and 7 with an area of approx. 19 hectares in the direct neighbourhood of the currently operated areas in the heart of the ‘German Offshore Industry Centre Cuxhaven’. Ships of all kinds will be handled at berths 400 metres long and up to 15.50 metres deep (at sea level). In accordance with the requirements of an offshore installation harbour, the berths are equipped for the arrival of jack-up vessels.

The construction of the new berths will be financed in equal parts by the state of Lower Saxony, the federal government and the concessionaires. In return for the 50 million contribution, the terminal operators will receive the right to use the respective terminal areas for at least 30 years.

Arne Ehlers concludes his statement on the award of the concession with the words: ‘Together with our parent company, the shipping company Briese Schifffahrt from Leer, we will continue to drive forward the energy transition on land and at sea to the best of our ability as a service provider to the wind industry - for the benefit of our children and grandchildren!’
