PRESS RELEASE

CDU port politicians in Emden

Wind power as the central topic

The energy transition and its impact on the ports of Lower Saxony were the focus of a visit to the seaport by members of the “Ports and Shipping” working group of the CDU parliamentary group. Timo Siebahn, Aiko Hollander and Reinhard Hegewald from Emder Hafenförderungsgesellschaft e. V. explained to the port politicians, led by Ulf Thiele and Hartmut Moorkamp, that the port supports the energy transition in two ways. After all, more than 5,000 large components for wind turbines are already being handled at the North and South Quays every year. Emden is also one of the most important service ports on the North Sea coast for turbines on the high seas. Personnel and materials are transported from here to the turbines in the German Bight. The CDU politicians were impressed by the expansion potential in Emden. “With areas in the inland port and the expansion areas in the Wybelsumer Polder, Emden has what it takes to further expand its already significant role in wind power in Lower Saxony,” said Moorkamp as his group's spokesperson for port policy. The inland port currently has quay facilities with a length of around 850 meters for wind energy handling. Further expansion capacities could be developed on the south quay. Ulf Thiele, deputy chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, predicts a promising future for the port of Emden as a transshipment port for wind energy. “Emden will also benefit greatly from the expansion of wind power on land and at sea in the long term and will increasingly become an important part of the energy transition,” said Thiele.
