Wilhelmshaven. Grant Hendrik Tonne, Lower Niedersachsens Minister of Economic Affairs, Transportation, and Construction, visited Jade-Dienst GmbH as part of an event organized by the SPD in Wilhelmshaven. At the invitation of Volker Block, the company served as the venue for the event and also provided an opportunity for a professional exchange on maritime infrastructure and the future of Wilhelmshaven as a port city
The managing directors of Jade-Dienst GmbH, Torsten Meinke and Jan F. Stein, used the visit to explain to the minister the importance of the Inner Harbor for Wilhelmshaven as a maritime business hub. The call at the port by the offshore supply vessel ACTA AURIGA clearly demonstrated the port’s capacity and relevance to the offshore wind industry as well.
The discussion also focused on the current conditions governing shipping traffic. Meinke and Stein referred to the Navy’s new port usage regulations in Wilhelmshaven, which pose new challenges, particularly for the terminals in the inner harbor. “The associated requirements represent a significant restriction for the cargo-handling companies in the inner harbor,” explains Torsten Meinke.
Another topic was the availability and reliability of the sea lock, which is of considerable importance for the smooth operation of the port. The challenges in recruiting qualified skilled workers, as well as efforts to establish a recognized apprenticeship program for mooring operators, were also discussed. The participants agreed that ensuring a sustainable supply of skilled workers is an essential prerequisite for the future viability of the maritime industry in Wilhelmshaven.
The visit provided an opportunity to convey firsthand the challenges and potential of the port location and to highlight the importance of efficient maritime infrastructure for the region's economic development.
Managing Directors Torsten Meinke and Jan F. Stein thanked Minister Grant Hendrik Tonne for his visit and the open discussion. They expressed their appreciation that the minister is paying close attention to the concerns of the Wilhelmshaven seaport and the regional maritime economy and is taking the time to learn about the challenges faced by local businesses through direct dialogue.
