EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven Handles Over 1 Million Standard Containers in a Year for the First Time

18. September 2025 |

For the first time in its 13-year history, EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven (CTW) has handled more than one million standard containers (TEU) in a single year. Today, the 1,000,000th TEU of 2025 was moved at CTW in the presence of Lower Saxony’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Grant Hendrik Tonne, and Kai Stührenberg, State Councilor for Ports at the Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation of the State of Bremen. The milestone container was brought to CTW by the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd as part of the weekly NE1 service of the Gemini Cooperation, which calls at Wilhelmshaven as its first European port. The customer is the globally active logistics company Gebrüder Weiss, headquartered in Lauterach, Austria.

Holger Bomm, Managing Director of EUROGATE Container Terminal Wilhelmshaven, said on the occasion of the milestone: “We are pleased and very proud to have surpassed the million mark. Thanks to the partnership with Hapag-Lloyd, the hub-and-spoke strategy of the Gemini Cooperation, and our other customers, CTW can finally demonstrate its full capacity. For 2025, we had set ourselves the goal of handling well over one million standard containers, and at this point in the year we can see that we will achieve this target. My special thanks go to our employees, without whom this milestone – so important to us – would not have been possible.”

Saskia Boljahn, Senior Director Operations North Europe at Hapag-Lloyd, added: “For our customers, one thing counts above all: reliability. The tide-independent deep-water port of Wilhelmshaven has established itself as a reliable hub – with stable processes, efficient handling, and direct connections to various regions such as the Far East or the Atlantic. The record throughput of over one million TEU shows: the port is gaining importance. It strengthens our network and our customers’ supply chains in Northern Europe on a lasting basis.”

Christian Frölich, Branch Manager in Bremen at Gebrüder Weiss, also offered congratulations: “We are very pleased that the milestone container has arrived with us. Our customers value Wilhelmshaven for its direct connections to the Far East as well as for the fast handling and high availability of goods. The milestone container comes from China and contains machine parts for an international customer in the agricultural industry.”
