Port of Papenburg
The seaport and inland port of Papenburg is situated directly on the sea waterway Ems, approx. 60.5 nm from the pilot transfer point. Three-quarters of the total volume of transshipped cargo in the port of Papenburg is generated through maritime transport. Papenburg is Lower Saxony´s number one transshipment centre for peat; additionally, building materials, agricultural goods, iron & steel, timber as well as project cargo are transshipped.
The port basin in the industrial area Nord of the town Papenburg has a total length of 1,320 m. A concept to develop the industrial and port area “Bokeler Bogen” provides for additional areas for the port industry and manufacturing companies. The seaport of Papenburg is increasingly positioning itself in the field of services for the offshore wind energy branch.
The seaport of Papenburg has excellent connections to the hinterland, for example via the Dortmund-Ems-Seitenkanal (side canal) with links to the entire inland waterway network. The direct link to the motorway A31 (North Sea – Ruhr district) and the adjoining motorway A28 (Oldenburg - Bremen) as well as the A7 (NL) present an attractive opportunity for developing extensive market areas.
Papenburg is also internationally known for the innovative shipbuilding of the Meyer-Werft. Furthermore, the test site of Automotive Testing Papenburg GmbH is located in Papenburg and many other renowned firms from all kinds of branches are based here. Horticulture is also one of the significant economic factors of this region.
