PRESS RELEASE

Federal government will not increase its share of port expansions

The Emden port industry is continuing its lobbying work for the seaport of Emden. At the end of the week, a broad-based delegation with representatives from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for East Frisia and Papenburg and from the Emder Hafenförderungsgesellschaft e. V. (EHFG) took part in the two-day National Maritime Conference in Bremen. In talks with Lower Saxony's Minister of Ports, Olaf Lies, and Dieter Janecek as the Federal Government's Maritime Coordinator, the Emdeners once again emphasized the importance of the seaport of Emden as a central transshipment point in northwestern Germany for imported and exported goods. They pointed out that the port of Emden also has national importance. "The importance of the port of Emden for the implementation of the energy turnaround should not be underestimated," said EHFG board member Reinhard Hegewald. This is because a considerable amount of service work for the offshore plants in the North Sea already emanates from it today. The Emden port representatives were sobered by the speeches of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Economics Minister Dr. Robert Habeck. Contrary to general expectations, neither of them had made any promises for greater financial participation by the federal government in investments in port infrastructure.
