PRESS RELEASE

CDU politician in conversation with Emden Port Promotion

"The port of Emden is in an excellent position to make a significant contribution to the success of the energy transition." Ulf Thiele, deputy chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament, said this during his meeting with the Management Board and Supervisory Board of Emder Hafenförderungsgesellschaft e. V. The politician not only has his sights firmly set on the Rysumer Nacken, which is well suited to the establishment of companies for renewable energy production and processing, but also on the Wybelsumer Polder and the port area itself, which he believes can be developed into an energy hub.

The construction of further wind farms in the North Sea is an essential part of the energy transition. The port of Emden is already being used for maintenance and services for the wind farms. Emden's location is an important advantage in this respect. Wind turbines are also stored and handled for import and export. EHFG Supervisory Board Chairman Timo Siebahn already describes Emden as an "offshore gateway".

The completion of the B 210 around the Emden district of "Friesland" will significantly improve the transportation of large wind turbine components to and from the port. Siebahn believes that a considerable increase in the handling of these systems in the port of Emden can be expected by then at the latest. However, the creation of additional handling areas is essential for this. Thiele also expects this to be the case and believes that the state government of Lower Saxony has a duty in this regard. "If Lower Saxony wants the energy transition to be implemented successfully, then it must ensure that additional handling areas are created in the ports. And quickly - especially in Emden," said Thiele. This would require a port pact with considerable investment in the port infrastructure. He pointed out that the state parliament's "Ports and Shipping" sub-committee would be discussing the potential of wind energy for Lower Saxony's seaports at its meeting next week. He invited the representatives of the Emden port industry to take part in the meeting.
