Emden port development company welcomes funding for large ship berth

Environment minister at on-site visit to outer harbor

Emder Hafenförderungsgesellschaft e. V. (EHFG) welcomes the decision of the Lower Saxony state government to anchor the funds for the construction of the mega-ship berth in Emder's outer harbor in the state's financial planning. "This is an important and correct step to counteract the effects resulting from the implementation of the Masterplan-Ems for the port of Emden," EHFG board member Reinhard Hegewald thanked Lower Saxony's Environment Minister Christian Meyer during a site visit in front of the planned berth. During his visit to the seaport city, the minister emphasized that construction work for the berth between Emskai and Emspier, which has already received planning approval, would start in 2024. The construction period is expected to take three years, he said. According to Hegewald, the EHFG fully supports the measures to improve the ecological situation in the Lower Ems. But in the course of the emerging low tide control, there will be a 40-centimeter drawdown in the outer harbor, he said. "In order to be able to continue handling there, compensation is absolutely necessary," Hegewald said. The large ship berth, which has come an important step closer to its implementation with the decision of the state cabinet, is a significant component of this compensation.
